What is Social Action and Community Media Production? Unit 31

For this unit, we were asked to create and present a PowerPoint presentation. This presentation was to explore social action and community media production. We were asked to research these two terms and present our findings to the rest of the class. In addition to this, we were asked to research upon two campaigns, and present to the class any relevant information (including their success, achievements and supporting stats).

So how successful was my presentation? Well, I ensured the layout of my PowerPoint was clear and not over-loaded with text. Too much information on one slide could potentially through off the audience away from the point. I was concise, but clear on what social and community action media production is, and I was able to give an example for each one to further express my knowledge. I explored their meaning with thorough research and I was able to concise this information into easy, clear and understandable notes to present. I gave a brief introduction to their purposes, which again, gave the audience clear understanding of the two terms.

In terms of the two campaign studies, I was able to demonstrate just how affective they have been. I wasn’t biased or opinionated, I was able to give relevant evidence, data and graphs that measured the impact these campaigns have had since they started. This data allowed the audience to get a real understanding on what they have changed and weather they have achieved their aims. To show that I have thoroughly researched into these two campaigns, I made it clear in my speech and on screen any sources I have collated my research from.

My chosen campaigns had many similarities as well as differences, so it was a great opportunity to compare them both during my presentation. I mentioned aspects such as the target audience and purpose to compare the two effectively.

When in the build-up to my presentation, I didn’t feel too confident. Presenting isn’t my strongest areas however, having completed various presentations in the past; I had a good idea on how to reach the top grade boundaries. I put my worries aside and I was able to speak clearly, confidently and enthusiastically. I knew that a presentation had to be formal, and whilst I was only presenting to colleagues, posture and register was still key to my success. Throughout the presentation it was tempting to lean back on a table behind me, but I kept my concentration, and ensured I was as professional as I can be. Our teacher gave us advice which was to make eye-contact. I was able to do this, whilst reading of my script, which was a good aspect in my presentation, as this kept the audience engaged and feel a little involved. On the other hand, I do feel mine could’ve been a little more interactive. I could’ve possibly asked questions, which would have engaged the audience even more.

My PowerPoint itself contained videos. They were the TV adverts the campaigns broadcasted. This allowed the audience to gain their own opinion on t
he campaigns. I also added slide animations, and added a setting to the PowerPoint that played the videos automatically. This made my presentation closer to the near-professional standard. In addition to this, I included animated gifs and interesting fonts that looked modern and suitable for my presentation.

Overall, I feel my presentation was very clear and I was able to give the audience a great understanding about social action and community media. I myself, have learnt two new terms- social action and community production. I wasn't not aware of these two terms at first, but after my research I was sure on what they are and how they are used...now it all seems simple to understand!

With the e-saftey project in mind, I think knowing these two terms will help. There will be many campaigns based around e-saftey. I can now research with them looking for there aims, how to measure their impact and aspects such as the target market. This is important as I am leading the department of ;suitable content'. This involves a lot of researching and analysing, and the skills and knowledge I have gained from this project will definitely help.
